HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE: Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray Review

With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the franchise grows in many ways. Not only does the film bring in a new director with Mike Newell, but this is the first film without a score composed by the legendary John Williams and Qudditch. Along with the new faces behind and in front of the camera, the story and the universe of Harry Potter expands to include not just one, but two more schools of witchcraft and wizardry amongst an international wizarding tournament that allows for the introduction of all sorts of new magic, creatures and more. With Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, all of these new elements fit very well in the 734-page book, but condensing that into a roughly two and a half hour film is quite a challenge. For my take on the Ultimate Edition of this sequel and all its supplements, hit the jump.

Thankfully, this is yet another successful installment in the franchise which continues the growth in maturity, intensity and wonder that was thrown into overdrive with Prisoner of Azkaban. Once again, as with my review of Prisoner of Azkaban, there’s no need to intensively recap a film that has been released for over five years, but here’s a quick synopsis and some brief praise for this fourth installment in the Harry Potter franchise. Harry finds himself selected as an underaged competitor in a dangerous multi-wizardary school competition as the wizarding world itself is suddenly stricken with fear after the appearance of an old symbol of evil sparks villainous activity. With stunning action set pieces, performances that have increased in quality with the age of lead actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and the return of the unspeakable Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has twists, turns and thrills that continue the tradition of the blockbuster fantasy franchise with flying colors.

As the story in the film delves deeper into the mythology of the wizarding world and the life of Harry Potter, so do the special features of this Ultimate Edition release. Yes, these supplements are the reason to partake in a double-dip of this home video release. Though, unlike Prisoner of Azkaban, this set isn’t bigger than the hardcover release of the book, it’s even more chock full of special features than its predecessor. Complete with several behind-the-scenes featurettes that are 45-minutes or longer, this is one of the most in-depth special edition home video releases I have in my possession. So let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this Ultimate Edition outside of the stunning HD transfer of the film itself on Blu-Ray.

THE EXTRAS:

Along with a 44-page collectible booklet highlighting the sound and music of Harry Potter, a removable, 3D lenticular cover and two collectible character cards featuring Ronald Weasley and Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, the Ultimate Edition of Goblet of Fire also includes the following special features:

Creating the World of Harry Potter Part 4: Sound & Music: Continuing the eight-part documentary series with one installment accompanying the Ultimate Edition releases of every film in the Harry Potter franchise, this portion sets its sights on both the sounds and the music that brings the wizarding world to life. Spending just under an hour with the elements of the film without which we would simply be watching a silent film, this documentary continues to illuminate the men and women behind the scenes who generally aren’t in the spotlight and signing autographs, but their blood, sweat and tears can be heard over every single frame of each film in the multi-billion dollar franchise.

On the music side of things, composers John Williams, Patrick Doyle and Nicholas Hooper (sadly Alexandre Desplat, composer for both parts of Deathly Hallows, does not appear in this supplement) spend time talking about composing some of the various themes they’ve put to screen. From the inception of the instantly recognizable Hedwig’s Theme (which was actually composed by Williams before he’d even seen a single frame of the film) to some of the character themes created for Dolores Umbridge and Voldemort, the creation of music and the difficulty of crafting suspense, excitement and sadness through music becomes clear. Splitscreen footage of the orchestra playing different sections of the score along with scenes from the film (sans any audio except the music playing over the scene) really heighten your awareness of even the most subtle presence of music. One of the musicians sums up their talents and skills by saying they could take a person standing in front of a blank white background, and with the addition of music make a viewer think that person was on another planet, in danger, or even just happy to be there.

With sound, which isn’t just another part of the music, you quickly learn that even the most simple audio cues in the film (like footsteps or doors shutting) were very meticulously crafted and chosen carefully. Foley artists (responsible for creating thousands of sound effects throughout the entire film in post-production) are tasked with providing practical sounds that we’re all used to in the real world. While you might not think the act of creating footsteps or the swish of robes takes much thought, there’s plenty of careful decisions to make in this arena. One such foley artist uses different shoes to step through artificial snow in order to differentiate between the sound of Harry’s footsteps from Hermione’s. It really is quite fascinating. These same artists are also tasked with creating the sounds of magic and creatures that no one has ever heard before. From the swish of a wand to the roars of magical creatures, sounds come from the most random of places and things. For example, the twisting of thick wires could be used to create the sound of a giant spider’s movement. Much more of the interesting aspects of this supplement must be seen (and certainly heard) to really understand the importance of even the most simple sounds.

Conversations with the Cast: In a conversation, led by Richard Curtis, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, the actors candidly talk about their on-set experiences, the effect of the franchise on their life and more. My personal favorite bit makes them seem much less than famous actors and more like the regular teenagers they were around five years ago. In speaking about the famous people they’d love to meet, Grint, an avid golfer, wishes to play against Tiger Woods while Radcliffe has dreams of Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson (me too, kid). Meanwhile, Watson just sits, looking so much younger than she does today, complete with braces on her teeth. If anything this supplement just lets you dwell on how much the trio has grown throughout this entire franchise. Also some lucky fans get to sit with the actors and ask some questions of their own. Note: This supplement can actually be found on both of the special features discs, but is presented in HD on the disc with the above documentary.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Behind the Magic: This 45-minute TV special was granted special behind-the-scenes access to all of the iconic sets to conduct interview with the cast and crew of Goblet of Fire. While the host, Ben Shephard is a little goofy and at times a too showy, the conversations are what really shine. From in-depth conversations about the future of the characters to the burst of hormones and romance in the story, all the bases are covered. Bonuses for anyone who is also a fan of Twilight since Robert Pattinson is frequently sighted in his turn as Cedric Diggory.

Inside Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: With a retrospective look back at the first three films, this is probably the least valuable of these extended supplements, but every new year in the franchise it seems like the kid actors have grown and matured so much between the films.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – The Adventure Continues: This 24-minute featurette primarily acts as a studio sanctioned tease for the film with more interviews (this time with more supporting cast members like Ralph Fiennes and Michael Gambon) and candid B-Roll from between various takes and scenes. included are highlights of new characters like Viktor Krum, Fleur Delacour and Cedric Diggory. While you won’t get much from this supplement that you don’t get from the others, the bits from the cast and crew will make any fan happy.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Some Animal Magic: Host Ben Shepherd returns, but this time he’s focusing on the various animals and creatures that show up in this fourth installment of the franchise. Once again granted exclusive access, Shepherd gets his hands on creatures like Mrs Norris (Argus Filch’s snitch cat) and even the real snow owl who plays Hedwig (and the other 68 owls who appear in one particular scene in the owlry). In addition, a whole slew of reptiles, birds and more that make up the 150 animals utilized for the duration of production are on hand. There’s also commentary from the actors and director Mike Newell about the difficulty and/or fun working with real-life animals.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – Dark Matters, New Masters: The most brief out of the documentary supplements provided, this 13-minute piece acts as more of a preview for those who hadn’t yet seen the film or needed some convincing. This has much more of the traditional fluff interviews talking about the excitement, scale and action of the film with the most simple look at the story and characters.

Deleted Scenes – There are eight deleted scenes presented in HD such as some eavesdropping on Severus Snape and Igor Karkaroff, the students singing the Hogwarts hymn and extended cuts of the Yule Ball and more. Note: The same scenes can be found on both discs, but are only presented in HD on the disc containing the above documentaries.

Theatrical Trailers: Every single theatrical trailer for the film is available for your viewing pleasure.

In addition, all of the special features from original two-disc DVD release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire are included on another disc. They are as follows:

Preparing for the Yule Ball: Making of the prom-like Yule Ball at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry

Reflections on the Fourth Film
The other special features are categorized by way of the Triwizard Tournament. Separated by the tasks in the film, there are 10-minute featurettes highlighting the making of each of the tournament events including the Dragon Arena, The Lake and The Maze. Along with featurettes on the tasks themselves, the tournament champions are also highlighted and even the rebirth of Lord Voldemort, complete with some creepy concept art, and interviews and on-set footage with Ralph Fiennes before special effects are applied are given ample time. In each of the arenas there are also some simple games to play (mostly for the kids).

THE FINAL WORD: A necessary addition to any Harry Potter fans collection, this Ultimate Edition of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire doesn’t disappoint. Once again, these will most likely be the editions included in the gargantuan box set that is sure to be released following Deathly Hallows Part II, so if you’re a rabid Harry Potter fan, these Ultimate Editions are for you.

Ivanka's Trump Card

The daughter of one of the world's most famous businessmen brings more to the table than a pretty face and a pedigree.

The attractive young woman at the boardroom table listens quietly and attentively as the discussion becomes heated. Emotions flare, fingers point, excuses fly.

Ivanka Trump hears everyone out. Then, with calm precision, she interjects a question that changes the dynamic, putting the others on notice that she sees right through their excuses for failing their tasks. The BS stops here.

Like her father, the star of this reality show, she’s all business. She’s blunt, too, unwavering. But she’s never gruff.

Having watched Ivanka Trump grow up in the media, it might be easy to dismiss her as a pretty girl born with a silver spoon in her mouth. But that would be too easy. Pretty? An understatement. This former fashion model is nearly 6 feet, lithe, with flawless skin and stunning Eastern European elegance. But that is not Ivanka Trump.

The daughter of one of the most famous businessmen in the world—“The Donald,” the outspoken real estate titan famous for his luxurious properties and The Apprentice reality TV show—Ivanka’s public profile and privileged, in-the-spotlight upbringing don’t sum her up, either.

Ivanka Trump today is a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur in her own right. As executive vice president of development and acquisitions for The Trump Organization, she’s helped rebrand her father’s company into one of the few real estate firms to thrive through the recent downturn. And in 2007, she launched Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry with a flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York and placement in every fashion magazine. The enterprise is spinning off into handbag and shoe lines this year.

What Ivanka Trump is not is a spoiled kid who fiddles around with vanity projects. When she started at The Trump Organization, her biggest fear was disappointing her father and being merely “competent.” She arrives early, stays late, and starts the workweek on Sundays to get a head start when the office is quiet.

“My father always taught me that you must truly love what you do. If you are passionate about what you do, you will ultimately succeed,” says Trump, 29. “I apply this lesson to every business venture I enter into.”

Nurturing Her Dream

Raised in the penthouse of her father’s Trump Tower during the years his business prospered, then tumbled, then rose again, she attended the best schools and traveled the world with her glamorous mother, Ivana, the Czech ski Olympian and one-time model. But Ivanka Trump also had a solid foundation rooted in close relationships with both her parents and her grandparents.

Trump admits her parents’ affluence afforded her many advantages, but their examples and work ethics also set a standard. In her 2009 New York Times best-seller The Trump Card: Playing to Win in Work and Life, Trump recounts accompanying her mother to The Plaza, the famed hotel owned at that time by her father and managed by her mother. Ivanka absorbed her mother’s passion for the work and her attention to detail. Likewise, she often visited her father in his office, where she gained business acumen by observing and listening.

“I cannot remember a time when I didn’t want to be in the real estate business,” Trump says. “Since I was a child, my dream was to work for my father at The Trump Organization and my end goal was always real estate.”

Her career path was not direct, however. As a teenager with an agent’s encouragement, she pursued work as a fashion model. Despite her beauty, modeling provided challenges; as a student at the elite boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall in rural Connecticut, Trump was prohibited from keeping a car—essential for her “go-sees,” or auditions for modeling jobs. Her parents told her she could pursue modeling if she maintained all A’s and figured out the car situation herself. Trump convinced the school’s administrators to make an exception to the car rule, and big modeling jobs followed—with Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Marc Bouwer and Thierry Mugler, as well as the cover of Seventeen magazine.

The Value of a Dollar

The money she made was hers to keep—and most of it landed in a Bear Stearns account. “I was young when I began my modeling career and it was a great way for my parents to teach me about the value of hard work and spending my money wisely,” she says. “I think I learned the lesson very young how quickly you don’t ‘need’ something when you are spending your own hard-earned money!”

Her parents expected her to spend her money on luxuries. She remembers boarding a commercial jet for the South of France with her brothers when their mother informed them she’d be flying first class, and unless they wanted to use their own money to upgrade, the kids were in coach. Ivanka was incredulous, but she now appreciates how any sense of entitlement was wiped away early on.

After graduating summa cum laude from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, Trump sought to become a builder. Instead of jumping into her father’s business, she took advice from a college professor and worked for a year as a project manager for another New York real estate tycoon, Bruce Ratner, at his Forest City Enterprises. Remembering her dad’s mantra that “there is no such thing as being early to a business meeting,” she showed up two hours early for her first day on the job.

After a successful year at Forest City, Trump moved to the family business as a vice president, where today she works alongside her older brother Donald Jr. and guides younger brother Eric.

Initially, she sought to prove herself by trying to learn everything alone. She quickly learned this only highlighted her immaturity. “I think the smartest people are always those who ask the most questions,” Trump says. “The reality is you can’t always be an expert at everything.”

Seizing Opportunities

When joining The Trump Organization in 2005, the real estate market was near its peak, financing was readily available and the firm was building, selling and managing numerous projects around world. When the real estate bubble burst in 2008, the business focus shifted from brand-new properties to the Trump Hotel Collection, where Ivanka Trump directs her energies. The hotel business involves partnering, remodeling, managing and ultimately rebranding existing properties under the Trump name.

In addition to her work with the hotel business, Trump also appears regularly alongside her father in The Apprentice. The show has been a top-rated prime-time boon for ABC and The Trump Organization alike.

“Press is a prime advantage for The Trump Organization—very few businesses have a globally recognized celebrity at its helm and we do our best to maximize it,” Trump says. “We have been able to transform our media power most often into positive messaging, allowing us to circumvent other costly marketing vehicles.”

Her beauty, name and celebrity are not the only traits that open doors. Trump is dedicated to formal etiquette. Like her mother, she writes thank-you notes on personalized stationery. She also sends handwritten notes to those she finds interesting or noteworthy—even if she doesn’t know them. After being impressed by headlines of Carlos Slim’s rescue of the financially troubled New York Times, she wrote such a note to the richest man in Mexico. A week later, the real estate mogul invited Trump to meet at his hotel, where she enjoyed two hours discussing business, real estate and media.

Her experiences in life and real estate came in handy when, three years ago, she launched Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry. Partnering with diamond trader Dynamic Diamond Corp., the business is an exercise in branding that goes beyond the formal elegance connoted by the name “Trump.” To find the right recipe, Trump capitalized on her early lesson in the importance of asking questions.

‘Pragmatic Beyond Her Years’

“When I was looking into expanding into the luxury jewelry market, I read as much as I could about the business and spoke to as many industry people as possible. I didn’t let the fear of appearing green get in my way,” she says. “I believe very strongly in the power of networking, and it would have been foolish not to use my many friends and business colleagues for their advice and expertise.”

Trump also trusted her own instincts on the subject of jewelry—which she counts as one of her passions. She cherishes memories of her mother dressing for formal events and allowing Ivanka to try on her baubles and vamp in front of the mirror.

Her father remembers these times, too. “Ivanka had an eye for design that was and remains impeccable,” says Donald Trump. “It’s no surprise that she has a successful jewelry business. Ivanka was always observant and pragmatic beyond her years.”

Ivanka Trump also learned from shopping trips with her mother to high-end jewelry stores—which she describes as oppressive mausoleums. Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry sets itself apart by targeting younger women with elegant yet fashion-forward products. The flagship store’s deco design is warm and welcoming, and security guards dressed discretely as doormen offer customers a friendly greeting. The brand’s signature color, coral, is incorporated into earring backs and necklace closures. The designs have been featured in nearly every fashion magazine.

“The niche that I found in the jewelry business was creating a product that a woman would feel happy with buying on her own or even letting her partner know she wanted,” Trump says. “We live in times where women are self-sufficient and comfortable buying or requesting something special for themselves to make into their own heirloom. Differentiation in your market is key.”

New Tech, Old-Fashioned Values

Ivanka Trump’s adept use of social media has also heightened the Trump real estate brand, her jewelry brand, and her own personal brand. At press time, Trump counted 814,000 Twitter followers and more than 7,800 Facebook fans. “Social media is a new and interesting avenue for me,” she says. “It is a great way to share my message with the public and control what I want to say.”

Like many busy entrepreneurs—especially those of her generation—she is tempted to overdo it with electronic communication. She’s since put limits on her use—her BlackBerry gets turned off from 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.—and she refuses to multitask in her communications. So if she’s talking to you on the phone, rest assured she’s not also instant-messaging with her brother.

That said, Trump is old-fashioned in many ways. Aside from sending handwritten notes, she always schedules time for returning phone calls and emails. “If you are a few days late on returning a phone call or responding to an email you could be missing out on a potential business opportunity,” she says.

As focused as she is on her work, Trump’s life is more than business. In 2009, she married businessman and New York Observer owner Jared Kushner. Last March, Trump joined the U.N. Foundation’s “Girl Up” initiative, which recruits young women to support U.N. career opportunities for girls in developing countries. She is also involved in the Eric Trump Foundation and the New York City Police Foundation.

Her days start with a yoga or spinning class, and reading a newspaper. Then, it’s off to work. “I am often the first one in the office each day,” she says.

Spoiled rich kid? You decide.

THE TOURIST Review

Twist endings are a tricky proposition.  When executed successfully, they give the film a bravura finish that will have people talking for years to come.  But that’s rare.  More often than not, they leave the audience confused and frustrated.  The Tourist is a charming albeit forgettable trifle of a film that chooses to throw an unnecessary and maddeningly stupid twist at the audience.  It’s a twist ending that not only blows up in the movie’s face, but blows it’s face clean off, turning a pretty veneer into a mangled pile of “Are you kidding me?’ and “That makes no goddamned sense.”

The film begins with the financial crimes unit of Scotland Yard trailing Elise Ward (Angelina Jolie), the most beautiful, confident, and well-attired woman in the world.  Possessing the beauty of a goddess and a look that screams “I will never have sex with you,” Elise is trying to throw the cops off her trail so that they’ll stop chasing her husband, Alexander Pierce, a mob banker who stole billions from his boss.  The British government is in on the chase because 744 million of that amount belonged to them (why the mobster has that money is never explained).  Despite their surveillance, Pierce is still easily able to communicate with Elise through letters and he informs her that she needs to find a stranger with his height and build so that the cops (who don’t know what Pierce looks like) will trail the poor stranger.  It’s an elaborate set-up for what seems like a minor diversion.
On a train from Paris to Venice, Elise chooses her stooge by sitting across from Frank (Johnny Depp), Wisconsin’s handsomest yet charmingly-befuddled community college math teacher.  Frank is, naturally, beguiled by the mysterious Elise but it turns out that the cops aren’t the only one after Pierce.  The mobster (Steven Berkoff) and his goons are also chasing down Pierce and because of a case of mistaken identity, they’re now after poor Frank.  It’s a charming premise that begins to lose steam as director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck seems more interested in capturing the beauty of Venice rather than developing the characters or devising exciting chase scenes.

But up until the twist, The Tourist is a satisfactory diversion.  While the visuals make The Tourist ultimately feel more like a tourism video for Venice (provided you’re ridiculously wealthy) than an attempt to better tell the story, Depp and Jolie acquit themselves well at their roles.  Jolie’s confidence is staggering and you can see the joy Elise takes in grabbing an entire room’s attention with nothing more than a grin.  It’s also nice to see Depp playing an everyman rather than the bizarre outsider he usually portrays.  Frank is a charming character and he gets solid laughs every time he speaks Spanish as if it were Italian.
And then the film makes its twist and ruins just about everything that came before.  I’m going to have spoil what happens in order to explain why it’s so bad, so if you’re still interested in seeing the movie, please stop reading now.

Okay, so here’s the twist: Pierce is actually Frank.  Midway through the film, we learn that Elise is actually working for the financial crimes unit but has been suspended.  She was working undercover in order to reveal the financial misdeeds being conducted by Pierce on the behalf of the mob, but instead she ended up falling for him.  At the end of the film, Frank reveals to Elise that he’s actually Pierce.  And since he’s got the money, the two get away with it.

The twist makes no sense.  Even if we assume that Elise doesn’t know Frank is Pierce until the end of the movie (and it’s possible she could have known from the beginning when you consider how poorly the twist is implemented and explained), his actions make no sense.  In order to avoid the cops, he puts himself and Elise in the crosshairs of the mob.  Furthermore, their behavior towards each other is inexplicable.  “Frank” is trying to woo Elise so Pierce is actually testing his wife’s love even though she cares for him enough to follow any instructions he sends her and doesn’t seem to care about her career or that he’s a thief.  The twist turns Frank from a lovable everyman caught in larger-than-life circumstances to a manipulative schemer who was playing everyone from the start.

Perhaps we could derive a modicum of pleasure from Frank’s deceit if we saw how he was pulling the strings the whole time.   Most movies with a twist ending like to show you how clever they are and will cut back to all the clues showing that you should have figured it out from the start, you gigantic dummy.  The Tourist doesn’t even bother.  Instead, Elise makes a quip about Pierce’s new face, and they set sail with all the money they stole.  No flashbacks or even a cursory argument of how Pierce chose to deceive her and make her his puppet.  In the end, Frank’s a liar, Elise is corrupt, they get rich off stolen cash, the cops decide to drop the case, and they all lived happily ever after.  That’s not a bad ending for a biting satire on post financial-crisis America, but it’s a miserable way to close out what’s mostly a light-hearted romantic thriller.

Hollywood and the Handsome Men

Johnny Depp hits the cover of the January 2011 issue of Vanity Fair.

Here is what the 47-year-old Tourist actor had to share with the mag:

On the media attention on his co-star Angelina Jolie: “Poor thing, dogged by paparazzi, her and her husband, Brad…all their kids. There are times when you see how ridiculous is this life, how ludicrous it is, you know, leaving your house every morning and being followed by paparazzi.”

Comparing Angelina to a legend: “I’ve had the honor and the pleasure and gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years. You know, you sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she’s hilarious. Angie’s got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach.”

On the appeal of his character in The Tourist: “I was always fascinated by people who are considered completely normal, because I find them the weirdest of all.”

Reese Witherspoon Covers 'Glamour' January 2011

Reese Witherspoon slips into a Burberry Prorsum dress on the cover of Glamour magazine’s January 2011 issue, on newsstands Tuesday (December 7)!

Here’s what the 35-year-old actress, who finished her look with a Neil Lane bracelet, Shery Shabani for Fragments necklace, and Fogal fishnets, had to share:

On how getting older makes her feel sexier: “I think as a woman, you get older, you feel more confident in your sexuality. You’re not as intimidated by it, not as embarrassed by it. Sexuality and femininity is an accumulation of age and wisdom and comfort in your own skin. I feel better - so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I am calmer; I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier.”

On women in Hollywood: “There’s always going to be somebody younger or sexier. That’s why I like to say, and it’s become my famous line, ‘Funny doesn’t sag.’”

On having more kids: “I would love to have more kids. Kids are the best part of my day. I don’t wake up to make movies. I wake up to hang out with my family.”

On making romantic comedies: “I love romantic comedies. I watch them all the time. I love all my fellow female romantic comedy queens, like Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner and Katie Heigl. I also think that the questions romantic comedies ask about men and women are universal.”
